Sometimes the Most Important Piece of Wilderness Is the Piece in Between
Imagine owning 600 acres of protected forest.
Then imagine discovering that one of the most important pieces isn't somewhere deep inside it.
It's the small piece you don't own.
The strip between two forests.
The wetland between two protected properties.
The few acres an animal has to cross to get from one safe place to another.
That's what makes a new conservation story from eastern Ontario much more interesting than its headline number suggests.
On August 25, Ontario Nature announced that it had permanently protected an additional 17.97 acres beside its Lost Bay Nature Reserve in the Thousand Islands region.
Eighteen acres.
For perspective, that's tiny compared with the enormous parks and wilderness areas we tend to associate with Canadian conservation.
But this particular piece of land has something acreage alone can't measure.
Location.
And sometimes where land sits matters just as much as how much of it there is.
Nature Doesn't See the Lines on Our Maps
Humans are very good at drawing boundaries.
Property lines.
Municipal borders.
Provincial boundaries.
Protected area boundaries.
To us, one piece of forest might end where somebody else's land begins.
A turtle doesn't know that.
Neither does a bird, snake, deer or butterfly.
Wildlife needs to move between places to find food, reproduce, shelter and adapt when conditions change.
That's why conservationists increasingly focus not only on protecting individual parcels of habitat, but on connecting them.
The newest Lost Bay acquisition does exactly that.
Ontario Nature says the property fills a missing part of a contiguous corridor of protected lands within Ontario's Frontenac Arch, while also providing an ecological buffer near two Provincially Significant Wetlands.
The acquisition brings Lost Bay Nature Reserve to approximately 662 acres.
But the bigger story is what those acres are connected to.
There's a Natural Bridge Between Algonquin and the Adirondacks
Zoom far enough out on a map and the Thousand Islands region begins to look even more interesting.
Lost Bay sits within the Frontenac Arch, where the ancient Canadian Shield extends southeast toward the Adirondack Mountains in New York.
The landscape forms part of what conservation organizations call the Algonquin to Adirondack corridor, or A2A.
In simple terms, it is a broad natural connection between two enormous landscapes:
Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario
and
Adirondack Park in New York State.
Forests, wetlands, islands, shorelines and other natural areas between them create pathways that wildlife can potentially use to move through the region.
Ontario Nature describes the Thousand Islands as an important bridge across the St. Lawrence River, helping species move through the larger corridor as environmental conditions change.
Suddenly those 18 acres don't seem quite so small.
They're part of something stretching far beyond their property lines.
Think of Habitat Like Pieces of a Subway System
Imagine a city with several beautiful subway stations.
Every station is immaculate.
They're spacious.
They're protected.
They're exactly where people need them.
There's just one problem.
There are no tracks connecting them.
They aren't much of a transportation system anymore.
Wildlife habitat can work in a similar way.
We can protect one beautiful forest here and another wetland ten kilometres away.
Both places may support wildlife.
But if the landscape between them becomes roads, subdivisions or other barriers, populations can become increasingly isolated.
Connected habitat gives animals more options.
A place to move.
A route to another breeding population.
Somewhere to go when food becomes scarce.
A way to respond when environmental conditions change.
That's why an 18-acre connection can sometimes contribute more to conservation than simply adding another isolated 18 acres somewhere else.
The value isn't only in the land itself.
It's in what the land allows everything around it to do.
And a Lot Is Trying to Move Through This Particular Landscape
The Frontenac Arch is recognized for unusually high biodiversity.
Ontario Nature says the newly protected property contains mature upland forest, shallow rocky barrens and seasonal wetlands.
Its forest canopy includes species such as sugar maple, red oak and shagbark hickory.
And then there's the wildlife.
The organization reports confirmed or high-potential habitat on the new property for 33 rare and at-risk species.
Among them:
Blanding's turtle.
A turtle with a bright yellow throat that may travel surprisingly long distances between wetlands and nesting sites.
Cerulean warbler.
A tiny blue songbird associated with mature deciduous forests.
Monarch butterfly.
One of North America's great migratory species.
Butternut.
A native tree that has declined dramatically because of disease.
And flooded jellyskin, a rare lichen found in wet habitats.
That's a remarkable amount of biodiversity associated with one seemingly modest parcel of Ontario land.
It also helps explain why connectivity matters.
Protecting an animal's destination isn't always enough.
Sometimes you have to protect the journey too.
A Turtle Is a Good Way to Understand the Problem
Consider a Blanding's turtle.
A wetland might provide fantastic habitat.
But that turtle may not spend its entire life inside one pond.
It can move between wetlands.
Females travel to find nesting areas.
Individuals may cross forests, fields and, unfortunately, roads.
So imagine protecting a perfect wetland while developing everything surrounding it.
Technically, you've protected the habitat.
Practically, you've made it much harder for the animal to use the larger landscape it depends on.
The same principle applies in different ways to countless species.
Birds.
Mammals.
Amphibians.
Plants whose seeds depend on wildlife or other natural processes to spread.
Nature functions through connections.
The Lost Bay Story Has Been Building for Decades
The newest acquisition isn't the first time Lost Bay has grown.
Ontario Nature's history of the reserve is really a story of gradually connecting pieces.
The original property was protected around 2000.
Additional land was added in 2009.
More followed in 2011.
Then, in 2014, another property connected two previously separate sections of the reserve.
A further 50-acre property was added in 2024.
And now another 18 acres have joined the puzzle.
Piece by piece, what started as separate protected properties has become a more connected landscape.
There's something satisfying about that.
Conservation doesn't always arrive as one enormous announcement.
Sometimes it happens one property at a time.
We Tend to Celebrate the Biggest Number
There's a natural instinct in environmental stories to focus on scale.
One million trees planted.
Ten thousand acres protected.
Hundreds of kilometres restored.
Big numbers feel important.
And often they are.
But the Lost Bay story is a reminder that conservation can't always be measured by asking:
How much?
Sometimes the better question is:
Where?
Protecting 18 acres that reconnects two ecosystems may accomplish something that a much larger but isolated property cannot.
Restoring one wetland might create habitat between two larger protected areas.
Building one wildlife crossing can reconnect territory divided by a highway.
Protecting one narrow strip of shoreline can maintain access between water and nesting habitat.
The pieces don't all have to be enormous.
They have to work together.
Maybe That's Also Why Environmental Problems Can Feel So Overwhelming
Climate change.
Habitat loss.
Wildfires.
Plastic pollution.
Declining biodiversity.
When we describe environmental challenges at that scale, it's easy to feel like anything smaller than a massive solution doesn't matter.
What difference does one tree make?
What difference does one restored wetland make?
What difference does one protected property make?
What difference does one person's behaviour make?
Lost Bay provides an interesting answer.
Maybe the better question isn't whether one action solves the entire problem.
Maybe it's whether that action strengthens something larger.
One tree can become part of a forest.
One wildlife crossing can reconnect two habitats.
One protected property can close a gap in a corridor.
One conservation partnership can support work already happening on the ground.
Small doesn't necessarily mean insignificant.
Sometimes small is the missing piece.

You don't have to be the entire solution to strengthen the system around you.

Maybe We Should Stop Waiting for the Huge Gesture
Most of us aren't going to purchase 18 acres and turn them into a nature reserve.
But the idea behind wildlife corridors applies at much smaller scales too.
Leave vegetation along shorelines.
Give wildlife space.
Don't create unnecessary trails through habitat.
Support local conservation organizations.
Learn why a wetland or seemingly empty patch of forest matters before assuming it doesn't.
And when protected areas ask us to change how we use a landscape, understand that what looks like one isolated rule may be protecting a much larger system.
The outdoors is incredibly good at reminding us that nothing really exists alone.
Streams feed lakes.
Wetlands protect water.
Insects feed birds.
Forests shelter wildlife.
And one piece of protected land can make another piece much more useful.
18 Acres Wasn't Really the Story
Ontario Nature's announcement was about 17.97 acres.
But that's not the number we'll remember.
We'll remember the idea.
That one relatively small forest can fill a gap.
That a wetland can matter because of what's beside it.
That protecting the route can be just as important as protecting the destination.
And that conservation doesn't always mean creating something enormous.
Sometimes it means noticing the missing piece.
Then making sure it stays wild.
Because sometimes the most important part of wilderness isn't the biggest piece.
It's the piece that connects everything else.
